Badlands – Winter – Dawn
acrylic on canvas
An icy fog aglow with a wintery daybreak’s late light in an archetypal badlands came drifting in unbidden from my memory as the time and place of this painting. A fence line with a gate and therefore an opening to possibilities notched into the dirt of the place seemed to be all that was required to complete this visual poem. As conceptual metaphor, visual counterpoint, and as an integral and iconic part of the western landscape the grid of a fence is too rich a vein not to have made an appearance in my painting. It has been an eventuality since the work veered down this path.
